Train Landscape 2
Artist: Alejandro Escobar
Train Landscape 2, 2023
Acrylic painting over sculpture
40 cm wide - 30 cm tall - 6 cm deep
This is the second piece of the Train Landscape series, where I explore the ethical use of Generative AI to create reference images for paintings. Observing landscapes from a train presents an intriguing contradiction. The large windows offer unique views and allow us to cover vast territories, yet being confined to the train prevents a genuine connection with nature. This experience parallels visiting a zoo to see landscapes rather than animals. The piece invites viewers to reflect on the tension between observing and experiencing nature.
I am an artist who has been exploring and challenging the conventional attributes of visual depiction for the past 17 years. My research delves into the intersection of traditional fine art techniques and digital technologies.
In my creative process, I combine painting and sculpture with photogrammetry, 3D modelling and animation, VR, and more recently, generative AI.
Statement:
There is a presence, an entity that visits me unannounced and unexpectedly. It whispers to my eyes, telling them tales about places and things trapped inside images.
I draw inspiration from my life experiences and create visual references by capturing moments with a camera or depicting my thoughts with AI-enhanced and AI-generated images.
To uncover what lies within, I model, stretch, carve, dig, and sculpt these images, guided mainly by intuition. The resulting extruded forms retain a raw, primitive essence while depicting fragments of my memory and imagination.
